Over the summer I continued to develop my head and heart themes of "nature" and "freedom". Below you will see you progress I made on interpreting each theme throughout the summer.

For nature, I decided to paint a landscape I saw while on my trip to the beach. My family and I have an annual trip to the local reserve every time we go, always looking for black bears or any other type of animal there. However, since I was at the beach, I made a minimal amount of progress. Up to this point, I have only developed the background, and I still need to create the middle and foreground.

By the end of July, I had fully developed a base for the middle ground. Around this time, I started to slow down on painting and gave more focus to my second dynamic duo piece. Additionally, with more traveling, it took a little bit of time until early August, when I decided to finish up the piece.

After finishing up my second dynamic duo piece, I came back and decided to complete this painting. Building on the previous stages, I added more details and finished the middle ground, as well as adding the bushes seen in the foreground.

Before I started developing the sketch, it took me a long while to decide on how to interpret a broad theme like freedom. Initially, I settled on something abstract, but then I figured I should do something more symbolic. That is when I decided to create something involving the Statue of Liberty. By the end of June, I had searched for a while on an angle I wanted to draw, and settled on the one you see to your left.

After slowing down on the painting, I switched over to working more on my Statue of Liberty sketch. I wanted to include some form of color, but did not want to use paint again since I was already painting the landscape. That is when I settled on using oil pastels and used a different color scheme to make it pop even more.

After adding the oil pastels to the sketch, I was not sure what else to add to create a more finished look to the piece. After thinking for a bit, I decided to smear the oil pastels that had not fully dried, and added some more lines to create a smoother blend. I also decided to add a yellow outline to make it pop even more.
