Project 4 Process Post

For this project I decided to continue using charcoal as my medium, as I was satisfied with the previous results from my first home project. Coach wanted me to feature some type of landscape in my project, as to build up my background until I'm ready to begin painting effectively. So with that in mind, I settled on an image taken while I was in Utah with family, featuring a dry and relatively simple landscape.

Unfortunately I do not have progress shots, but throughout this process there were many moments where I had to take a moment and look back. With faces and figures I have more experience of almost winging it, able to get a finished result without having to worry about proportions or shadow as much, due to my background with drawing either. But with this project, while being familiar with charcoal as a medium, I had to take a couple moments to think through what goes where, and more specifically what is what. With the numerous cracks on the rock and branches on the trees, I have to pick and choose what to include which best accurately represented the original image.

Another thing which slowed my process of creation was using a tinted paper rather than a white sheet. While it may be supposedly easier, as there is already a developed mid ground, I prefer developing my own mid ground, and using more of subtraction rather than addition for my highlights. The one upside I have noticed though is that when I do get the highlights down, they pop out more than what they would on a regular sheet of paper, adding some type of effect to the piece.
